Understanding single-phase and three-phase power in the U.S.

In the United States, most homes are connected to the grid through a single-phase supply, which supports everyday household needs—from lighting and kitchen appliances to EV chargers and heating—without issue.

For larger properties or homes with higher energy demands, such as those with large heat pumps or commercial-grade EV chargers, a three-phase connection may be required or considered. In these cases, the SolarEdge Home Battery 48V offers a flexible, modular storage solution that can be expanded up to 23 kWh and supports backup power during outages.

Upgrading from single-phase to three-phase power is possible but typically requires approval from your local utility and can involve significant costs. For most homeowners, this upgrade is unnecessary.

If you’re unsure about your power connection, our team at HomeBattery.us can help assess your setup and recommend the best solution for your needs.

Two Battery Models, Two Battery Chemistries

SolarEdge offers two versions of its Home Battery, each tailored for different connection types and energy needs.

The SolarEdge Home Battery 400V is designed for single-phase homes and features a fixed capacity of 9.7 kWh. It uses NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) battery cells, which provide high energy density in a compact design. Due to their chemistry, NMC batteries should be installed in well-ventilated, non-living spaces like garages or dedicated utility rooms. For safety reasons, indoor installation in living areas is generally not recommended in the U.S.

On the other hand, the SolarEdge Home Battery 48V is built for three-phase systems and uses LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) cells. This chemistry offers excellent thermal stability and long cycle life, making it safer and suitable for indoor installation. The 48V battery is modular, allowing you to expand capacity from 4.6 kWh up to 23 kWh depending on your needs and space.

With both options, SolarEdge lets you choose between compact, high-voltage efficiency and the added safety and flexibility of a low-voltage, stackable system.

The SolarEdge One App – Smart Energy at Your Fingertips

Managing your battery is simple with the SolarEdge One App, giving you full visibility into how your solar panels, battery, and household energy work together.

You can view real-time data, set charging schedules, track your savings, and let the system automatically adjust to changing electricity rates.

The app also integrates with other smart devices in your home. If you have a compatible EV charger, water heater, or heat pump, it can automatically divert excess solar energy to them. This smart energy management helps you maximize self-consumption and reduce reliance on the grid—even during the darkest winter days.

Ready for the Dynamic Future of Energy

One of SolarEdge’s strongest features is its ability to work with dynamic electricity rates and trade energy on imbalance markets. Your battery can be programmed to charge when prices are low—usually at night—and discharge when prices rise.

Combined with solar power, this helps boost your financial returns and shortens the payback period of your battery system.

If your utility supports it, you can even earn income by letting your battery provide grid flexibility, helping balance supply and demand in real time. These features make SolarEdge not just a smart investment in sustainability, but also a potential source of recurring value.

A Resilient Home, Even in Outages

With the right setup, a SolarEdge battery can keep your essential appliances running during a power outage. Whether it’s your fridge, internet router, or key lighting, the system delivers backup power where you need it most. Battery management is seamless and automated within the SolarEdge ecosystem, controlled easily through the app.
